They are everywhere. You see them at grocery stores, sporting events, concerts, churches, parks, shopping malls, restaurants, and schools. They make up more than 25 percent of the U.S. population. They are living longer than ever; with an extra two to three decades of life that wasn’t a reality for past generations. As they continue to influence our country, society, and churches, older adults will be a dynamic and influential force in the 21st century.
“Most cutting-edge ministries in the church for the past 40 years have been aimed at reaching the younger generations. Indeed, churches should continue to reach young people with the Gospel. But few churches have given much thought or resources to reaching older generations. And if something does not change in our churches, this age wave will pass by with millions never connecting with the church, and with millions never responding to the Gospel.”
Thom S. Rainer, President of LifeWay Christian Resources, Nashville, TN.
The purpose of the Encore ministry of First Baptist Church is to “Make Disciples Who Make Disciples” of adults 55 and older. Millions of older adults are lost, without hope, and in need of a relationship with Jesus Christ. Here they will find new friends; discover people who care; learn new skills; a place of acceptance, understanding, and support; a place to find reasons for real living; a place to be both pupil and teacher and learn from one another; having fun; finding new directions; and so forth.
